It took Taiwan 18 long years of preparation to see its first public service broadcaster PTS (Public Television Service Foundation) come to life. Now it is accelerating its path to catch up with what it has missed. On July 1 st, 2006, PTS at its 8 th anniversary ceremony officially married the 35-year-old, previously government-owned Chinese Television System (CTS). The two major terrestrial networks have hence merged and formed Taiwan Broadcasting System (TBS). Furthermore, starting from 2007, three other TV channels( Hakka TV, Indigenous TV and Taiwan Macroview TV) will also join the group under the administration of PTS to provide a more influential and effective public service broadcasting in Taiwan.

On June 30, 2006,Taiwan's legislature granted Taiwan Broadcasting System (TBS) US$137.38 million for the construction of a digital terrestrial broadcasting platform. The budget will support sub-projects on High-Definition TV (HDTV), Single Frequency Network (SFN), DVB-H mobile TV, newsroom automation, non-linear post-production network, and digital archiving. While around US$31 million has been allocated for the development of a Single Frequency Network, US$86 million of the budget will be put towards an HDTV transmission network and associated facilities (studios, etc). TBS is playing a key role on the road to digitization in Taiwan.
